  Why Rutgers Newark

If you are an international student, visit the NASPAA International Web Portal where you can search the database and find useful information on public affairs education.

What sets the School of Public Affairs and Administration apart? Our academic excellence provides a unique and truly powerful education. Our programs place a particular emphasis on performance management – how to measure, report and improve what government is doing.

Our internationally renowned faculty is actively engaged in a variety of related research, and our National Center for Public Performance is recognized as a leading research center. We maintain close relationships with New Jersey’s local and state government agencies. As such, students have unparalleled opportunities to participate in cutting-edge studies, gain experience in the field and establish relationships that will help them advance their careers.

Beyond New Jersey, Rutgers the School has established a strong international presence. The School, Renmin University and the Chinese Public Administration Society organize a bi-annual conference in China. In Korea, Rutgers SPAA works with the Korean Association of Public Administration, several universities and other groups on research and conferences. In South Africa, the School engages in regular scholarly exchanges and collaborations.  And in Western Europe, the School has helped develop a series of trans-Atlantic dialogues between ASPA and the European Group on Public Administration.

Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration offers a full range of advanced degree and certificate programs focused on training tomorrow’s leaders in education, research and practice. Students are taught by award-winning faculty and frequently enjoy guest lectures by professionals in the field. Small class sizes, interactive discussions, research and hands-on applications are integral parts of the learning experience.   More than 300 Master’s, Doctoral and certificate candidates currently are enrolled in our wide range of programs. They are as eclectic as Rutgers-Newark itself, which is known as the most diverse campus in the nation. U.S. News & World Report has ranked our campus #1 in Diversity for each of the last 10 years. Rutgers SPAA’s rich composition in race, ethnicity, gender and nationality is considered a major contributor to the campus’ acclaim, and it certainly enhances our students’ experiences.

Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration maintains a number of collaborative relationships within the University. These affiliations benefit students by enabling cross-disciplinary learning.  Rutgers SPAA is part of the Ph.D. in Urban Systems program, a three-way collaboration that also involves The New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.  The school cross-registers students with the Ph.D. in Management at Rutgers Business School.  Students at Rutgers SPAA can elect to take classes in Economics, Political Science, Global Affairs and Criminal Justice.
